EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
