The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
